August 24 – 29, 2022: Da Nang, Linh Ung Temple, Son Tra Mountain, Thu Bon River, Cua Dai Estuary – Hoi An Wetlands

Terek Sandpiper (Xenus cinereus) Cua Dai Estuary, Hoi An 26 August 2022 Callyn Yorke

Weather: Mostly overcast to partly cloudy; 29C to 34C; winds, light out of NW, NE; Medium to high tides; relatively low for August 24 survey. Seas calm to moderately choppy, surf 0.2 – 1m.

Time: 0530 – 0900 hrs.

Observers: Da Thao Le Nguyen, myself; with Le Quy Minh (8/24).

Optics (CDY): Zeiss 10×42 binocular; Nikon D3X with Nikon 200-500 mm AF VR lens; Google Pixel 3X cell phone.

Areas Covered:

Da Nang (DAN) city and suburban streets, gardens, beach, buildings and vacant lots (casual daily surveys).

Linh Ung Temple (LU) grounds and adjacent secondary forest edge (2 Surveys: 8/25 & 8/27);

Hoi An Wetlands (HAW), A section of the Thu Bon River delta, north of Cua Dai bridge, about 5 km out at the terminus of a 0.6 km road (signed, Dinh Da An Bang) passing Cam An village, we briefly surveyed is a large inland tidal marsh (1 Survey, 8/24);

Hoi An Wetlands (HAW): Tidal marsh in the Thu Bon River Delta, 24 August 2022 Callyn Yorke

Cua Dai Estuary (CDE) is located east (seaward) of Cua Dai bridge and harbor, on the north side of the Thu Bon River, adjacent to a light house and the VinPearl Resort. This deltaic terminus zone has experienced heavy siltation, flotsam and trash. At low to medium tides, nearshore sandbars and a lagoon with soft-sand mudflats are attractive to shorebirds. Landward vegetation consists predominantly of Casuarina woodland and periodically disturbed coastal scrub and second-growth. Nearby resort grounds feature gardens with ornamental flowering shrubs and trees. One or two local fishermen were walking around in the shallows during the surveys; otherwise, the shore area was comparatively quiet and undisturbed by human activities (3 Surveys: August 24, 26 & 28);

Cua Dai Estuary (CDE) of Thu Bon River, Hoi An 26 August 2022 Callyn Yorke

Son Tra Mountain (STM): We drove to the southwest gated entrance, parked and walked about 1.5 km northeastward, to a covered observation deck near the summit. The mountain vegetation consisted mostly of mature broad-leaf evergreen forest, with open, vine-covered areas of second-growth. Bird life was localized, mostly in mixed species flocks moving quickly through the middle and upper levels of tall shrubs and trees. Except for a few motorbikes, traffic was light (the road was closed to other vehicles, presumably due to road construction on the north side and downed utility lines. After our walking survey, we drove the paved roads through the construction on the northeast side and down to a large coastal resort. The main road back to Da Nang connected there, passing the entrance to Linh Ung Temple (1 Survey: 29 August).
